Shout out to Jenny!

*This blog entry goes out to a wonderful friend, Jenny Harding, who felt my angst and delivered us up a fabulous dinner on Thursday night. We're still eating it now bc it was so heaping huge and delicious. Thank you Jenny! You are so kind!*

As Elizabeth commented on my last post, I could easily resolve my scheduling conflicts with watching the next season of LOST by taping it on a vcr if we're busy. I was never good about programming a vcr but that's better than paying for tivo.

But today we suffered a new issue. Our cable went out. Like, for good. We have to check the bills to see if we even pay for it. Might need to start paying for tv. I doubt they do a bare-bones cable package that only plays PBS, Playhouse Disney, and whatever channel will play LOST. I understand that kids these days can watch tv shows via the interweb. Heather Jackson keeps trying to tell me about this but it sounds too much like witchcraft. We already made the jump from a landline phone to two cell phones. Could we use our tv as a dvd player for the kids and watch our shows (LOST, Daily Show, new Simpsons) on the computer? It seems too futuristic to me. And also very crunchy (a la the Yamakawas, the Alexanders, and nearly everyone in my grad school). Both sound good, don't get me wrong, but they also somehow sound like work. Like, more to juggle, rather than just sit down, switch on, tune out.

I dunno, this is probably the right thing for us. But I'll definitely need to get my hands on more Elmo and Curious George videos, stat!

Best Moment of the Day: We got a lot of household chores done. Yeah! Jeremiah and I took turns playing with the kids so the other could do some things and overall we all had a nice day.

Worst Moment of the Day: I went through all the work to prepare and set up for my program today (Blue Crab Dissection) and no one showed up. It sucks to offer free programs where people don't have to pre-register. I'm not sure how to fix this dilemma but I'm really tired of putting energy into programs and not witnessing any return.

Thoughts of the Day: Still playing "one free square" and trying to move all the pieces of my life around so that they fit back together into the right picture. And plan some consistency for my kids into our schedule. I'll let you know when I get it all worked out.

  1. Aw come on, you know you want to go over to the hippie darkside. Hulu.com baby! Though watching TV on the internet does tend to spoil you for real TV because the commercials are much longer on TV.

Also, if you watch regular TV without cable, you might get secret bonus channels. Apparantly the digital signal allows multiple channels per number on the dial- so you can get like channel 28.1, 28.2, 28.3, etc. We get 3 PBS's now, one is in Spanish.

Is crab dissection anything like crab picking? Maybe they should have offered beer to go with it.

  2. Thanks for the shout out. I love that dish too...which is why I made it for you! We have lots of shows on DVD if you ever want to borrow them. The library is also good for that - sadly, Cole says the library is a place to get movies. Cole also plays on playhousedisney.com and pbskids.com which fills his fix for shows in lieu of watching tv. I too have watched tv on the computer but need a bigger screen. Lost is available the day after it airs on the ABC website. I didn't have cable until I moved in with Chris.
