Nearing the end

Today is the first day of early voting! We are so relieved to be this close to the end but it is bittersweet. So many ideas left undone...

Last night I went with Jeremiah and his dad to the Pasadena Business Association "Meet the Candidates" night. It was supposed to be the biggest event before the election, and there was 50-100 people there (I'm bad at estimating in a large space), but there were only 3 voters there. Everyone else was a candidate or part of a candidate's entourage. (I'm pleased to say that one of the three voters had already voted and he said he voted for Jeremiah!)

Each candidate got 2 min for opening statements, 2 min to answer a question, and 2 min for closing statements. So it was a 2.5 hour event since EVERYONE was there! Senate, Delegate, County Executive, County Council, Comptroller, Sherif, State's Attorney, and anybody else if I forgot anyone. I mean, they were ALL there.

It actually helped me figure out who I was going to vote for- Jeremiah has heard these guys do their thing dozens of times so I know who HE thinks should win. It was nice to make up my own mind and see that I actually totally agree with Jeremiah. It's not about who has the most signs or what party they're with. It really is about the person's intelligence, abilities, and knowledge. Jeremiah had a good reception but that's only with those in the know. The majority of voters are uninformed so it's scary that anything could happen!

The nicest part of the event was that we were all commiserating. First person I ran into was the new wife of the other Democrat running with/against Jeremiah. Those guys are really friendly and helping each other out in small ways and I wonder if they'll remain friends after the campaign. Anyhow, she said "I can't wait until this is all over. I want to have a bonfire with these signs bc I can't wait to get them out of my house." AMEN!

I also had a nice little talk with the Republican incumbent for Senate (he lives down the street from us!). He's a nice guy though we don't see eye to eye on some issues. Anyhow, there have been a lot of ads slamming him lately and he shared with me how beaten up he feels. He said he just can't wait for this to be over, whether he wins or loses. AMEN!

I also had a nice little talk with the Democrat running a really hard fight for county council. He's a great guy and I really really hope he wins bc the guy he's running against is a prick and Jeremiah has heard many personal accounts from people that that guy screwed over to get ahead. Anyhow, the nice guy looked absolutely exhausted and said he just wants this all to be over. He's never run for office before either and we're all shell shocked at how much it sucks.

If you do this and then win, it's all worth it and it makes sense in retrospect. If you do this and then lose, how do you get the energy to try it again? It sucks.

Jeremiah's out at the voting places today, waving and handing out cards. I'm to join him next week but today we decided that I'd sit out so I could be with the kids. They are absorbing all the anxious energy around here and it's starting to show. They are having big separation anxiety from me at the smallest things. This week J. is having more potty accidents and C. is having sleeping issues. Sigh. Hang in there, kids. We still have 11 more days to go!
