Yard Signs

The campaign yard signs are in!

There's a certain day that marks the start of campaign sign season and you can tell that it already passed. There are big signs for all the incumbents all over the place suddenly. That's bc a lot of them already have signs, locations, and permission. They've been through this successfully before so they're literally "old pros" at it.

We're, ah, not quite there.  First off, there are the monstrous wooden signs that go at intersections and along highways.  They are expensive and cost a lot of time and labor to install. We are not planning on having any of them for those reasons. Instead, we've got 1,000 smaller yard signs and we're hoping to run out of those and maybe order more. You need to pick your strategy for signs and that's what we're going with.

I just have to remember that 4 years ago, when the incumbents first got elected, they were in the same boat that we are. And they won. So we can too.

It's very stressful to have the yard signs in our house. It marks the beginning of the end but it's still only July so there's still tons to do.  We really need to get these signs out bc they are an important part of the message "who's that guy- Chiappelli? seems like he's got some support, even if he doesn't have tons of money for big signs."

The laws about campaign signs are very grey and it's hard to tell if some of the political signs are on public land where we could put ours too, or if they're on property owned by that business and they're there as an endorsement where ours wouldn't be welcome.  It would be easier if there were signs up by others besides the incumbents bc we could gage if that area is for just Republican signs or if it's for anyone.  But of course, everyone is hoping that someone else will go first and spend time getting permission or doing research and then we can all just plop up next to each other in that spot.  And it looks like we're going first.

So we're starting with yard signs for people that are already big supporters, and then moving to asking new people, and then asking well-placed businesses, and then finally, closer to the election, we'll do public spaces that maybe someone else has researched out.

I don't know about you, but I always feel better when it's the night before a final exam. Because you can really only do 1 more hour of studying at best. If you didn't know it before, you won't really know it now.  I wish the election was next week so that the end was in sight. Instead, we have many months left and the work will continue to fill the time left. You can always do more. There's never a time when you can sit back and take a break, knowing that you've done all that you can do.

There was a campaign staff meeting here last night and it still looks like Jeremiah's on track. That's good.
-The paper published his brother Josh's name instead of his (doh) and published a photo with Jeremiah goofing off in the background but didn't list his name as being in the photo, so that's good.
-He is going to some local events to be seen which is important.
-And the local paper (the bad one that hasn't published anything that we've sent them ever but every single issue is super Republican party heavy) asked for Jeremiah's advertising and he was able to tell them that he won't advertise bc they have ignored him.  They said that they will cover any elected official, which is a very convenient way to get around that, except that right now the elected officials are running for reelection so in reality those lines are not fair any longer. Their session is over. They are candidates too.  And a new local candidate joining the race was news to other papers- it's not news to the local paper? And I honestly don't think they'd do the same coverage of an elected official that wasn't a Republican. I'm not exaggerating- it's really sick.

Anyhow, I've got a trunk full of yard signs if anyone local wants one!
