I'm heading back to school in the fall.
I'm taking the first steps towards becoming a midwife but it will be a very very long process (7-10 years). I need to take some prerequisite courses in order to qualify for an accelerated Bachelors of Science in Nursing degree (which is for people who already have a bachelors in something else such as environmental studies).
Then once I have my BSN I would take the exams and become a Registered Nurse, possibly in labor and delivery which would be awesome.
Then I would continue in school to become a Certified Nurse Midwife.
So you can see that I need to start at the bottom. I've taken all of the general education courses needed to get into the accelerated program except for 6:
-Anatomy and Physiology 1 and 2
-Microbiology with lab
-Nutrition
-Statistics
-Developmental Psychology
So my plan is to take 10 credits this fall at Anne Arundel Community College, taking two online courses and one saturday class. Then maybe I can get the rest of the prereqs done in the spring. And maybe start in a nursing program next fall or the following spring (I think I need to get the prereqs done BEFORE the application date so I wouldn't be able to start in the fall).
If anyone knows any midwives, I would love to talk with them about their path and get their advice. A few people have already made connections for me and I'm getting good advice already.
So hurray! I'm very excited! Now might not be the very best time to start something new like this but if I did it now, it would get me where I want to be in 7-10 years. There's no time like the present, right?!
I am so proud of you! You continue to amaze me with your dreams. I will help and support you in any way I can!
