We were so excited for our rock candy! It was perfect. A simple recipe, lots of parts that the kids could do, science magic as they grow, and then a pretty candy treat for J.'s birthday party guests to take home. We had a lot of fun making it and checking on it all week.
But it never grew. Most common cause is that we didn't add enough sugar but I'm telling you, we did! We couldn't see the bottom of the pot there was so much sugar! Sugar was floating in the mix because it wouldn't dissolve any further! Plus we used all of our sugar. But it still didn't work.
Second most common cause is that you don't wait long enough. Well, it's been over a week and we're still watching for growth. Even just one little crystal on one out of ten would be great!
So I was reduced to purchasing rock candy online for her party guests because if your party theme is geology and your family hates pop rocks, you really have no other option.
The rock candy and the geodes are the only party expenses (though they come to way more than you would think!) beyond groceries because we're being very frugal. Reusing party props, making our own cakes, and stretching creativity for the games, activities, and take home gifts. We have to budget the party this year because of having two large parties. 19 kids at the Friday party, 11 kids at the Sunday party, plus family guests on Sunday. 30 kids! We know this is out of hand and goes against all of our intentions. But it is what it is because J. really wanted to invite all of our Friday guests and we really wanted to invite all of our Sunday guests (plus many that are totally mutual).
In the meantime, we hold vigil over our rock candy concoction and are very excited for what we have planned. It won't be everything that we could do if we had less kids and more money, but for a 5 year old's birthday party, it'll do!
In April we have C.'s 3rd birthday party. Because of her age, not being in preschool, and hopefully having warmer weather, we get to try this again with intentions of having a Green, Homemade Birthday Party. The theme she picked is "birdhouses". Luckily for a 3 year old, you don't have to do more than provide cake and she's good to go, theme or not. Last year her party included planting flower gardens with guests (and their presents to her were the flowers) and opening a homemade pinata. Perfect. I just may do something like it again!
